Charles Dickens’ Christmas ghost story is reset in the Great Smoky Mountains in the new stage musical.
Set to run December 3–29, the musical, as previously announced, features an original score by eight-time Grammy winner Parton and a book by David H. Bell, artistic director of the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol will be directed by Curt Wollan, who adapted the original story with Bell and producer Paul T. Couch.

Dickens’ London-set ghost story is reset in the Great Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee at the height of the Great Depression, where Ebenezer Scrooge is recast as the callous owner of a mining company town. A concert production of the musical was staged at the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota, last November.9.

Dolly Parton’s life and career are a rags-to-rhinestones story. Born the fourth child of 12, Dolly grew up in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, nestled against the Great Smoky Mountains. Her songs have captured the hearts of generations. Her trademark style is recognized around the globe.
Dolly’s prolific writing and recording career span 50-plus years. Her self-penned hits include Jolene, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You. She holds the Guinness World Record for the Most Decades with a Top 20 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Chart and for the most hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Chart by a female artist.
Dolly starred in numerous movies for the large and small screen, including the hit movie 9 to 5 which became a hit Broadway musical for which she wrote the music and lyrics.
Dolly is one of an elite group of individuals to receive at least one nomination from all four major annual American entertainment award organizations; Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. In 2004 she received the U.S. Library of Congress Living Legend award and in 2006, the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. In 2011, she was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Stories from Dolly’s life have been the subject of two NBC movies: Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors and Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Life.
Recently, Dolly’s love and generosity for her Tennessee mountain home was heroically demonstrated in her efforts to help the victims of the 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires. Her Emmy-winning Smoky Mountains Rise telethon raised $9 million. Her philanthropy also extends to children around the world through her Imagination Library, which inspires a love of reading by providing a book a month to more than one million children age five and under in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia.

David H. Bell has served as Artistic Director of the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC, and Associate Artistic Director to Kenny Leon at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. He is currently the Artistic Director of the American Music Theatre Project and Director of the Music Theatre Program at Northwestern University. As director, choreographer, or author, David has received 45 of Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Award nominations (winning 11), five Carbonell nominations (Florida), as well as the Dramalogue Award (LA), the Helen Hayes Award (DC.), and numerous awards in Atlanta. His musical, Hot Mikado (book, additional lyrics) was nominated for the Olivier award (London’s West End). Curt Wollan is the Executive Producer and Director of Troupe America Inc., that for forty years ran The Plymouth Playhouse in the Twin City area, premiering such hits as How To Talk Minnesotan, The Musical, The Lovely Liebowitz sisters, and the entire Church Basement Ladies series of musicals. In the summer, he produces and directs the famous Medora Musical in Theodore Roosevelt National Park which in the past year has been featured on NBC Nightly News, The Travel Channel, MSNBC, and received a two page spread in the Sunday New York Times. Curt has produced and directed many National Tours including Steel Magnolias, Driving Miss Daisy, The 1940's Radio Hour, Hank Williams - Lost Highway starring Jason Petty, and Stephen King's Ghost Stories. He has also co-produced three National Tours of Forbidden Broadway, directed M*A*S*H*'s Jamie Farr and William Christopher in the National Tour of The Odd Couple, and directed the National Tours of Moon Over Buffalo starring Gavin MacLeod, The Sunshine Boys starring Dick Van Patten and Frank Gorshin, and Same Time, Next Year, starring Mackenzie Phillips and Adrian Zmed. As a free-lance director, his work has been seen at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Theatre Under The Stars in Houston, The Barter Theatre, Kansas City's New Theatre Restaurant, and at Dollywood where he directed several productions with Dolly Parton. Paul T. Couch is one of the theme park industry’s most award-winning entertainment producers, having won over 20 Brass Ring Awards and 6 Golden Ticket Awards during his tenure (2003-2014) as Dollywood’s Director of Entertainment and Executive Producer. It was there that Paul and Dolly began their creative partnership that included several major musical productions and a TV special for the Hallmark Channel. Prior to that he was General Manager of Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium where he produced the musicals Always, Patsy Cline, Lost Highway: The Music and Legend of Hank Williams, and Bye, Bye, Love—The Everly Brothers Musical, as well as award-winning productions of Pump Boys and Dinettes and Cotton Patch Gospel. More recently, Paul served as Executive Producer for nine tracks of Dolly’s first-ever children’s album, I Believe In You. He currently helms his own Nashville-based production company where he serves as Creative Producer and he also serves as the Executive Director of The Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tennessee.

It’s “Dino Summer” at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo
Life-size Animatronic Dinosaur Invasion and Larger-Than-Life Dino Puppet Show Are “Unextinct” From June through August 2019
This summer visitors can travel back millions of years as the Smithsonian’s National Zoo presents a “Dino Summer” featuring two dinosaur experiences of prehistoric proportions—“Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live,” an experiential theater production featuring a larger-than-life cast of dinosaur puppets, and “DinoRoars,” an outdoor exhibit of six massive animatronic dinosaurs that move and roar.
“We’ve caught dino-fever here at the Zoo,” said Steve Monfort, John and Adrienne Mars Director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. “Whether you’re 5 or 50, you’ll marvel at a giant T. rex in addition to a giant panda. We’re thrilled to bring our visitors back in time for a spectacular summer.”
Visitors will be able to look up and listen as the roar of a 39-foot-long T. rex joins the symphony of Zoo animal chirps, squawks and chuffs. “DinoRoars” will be unextinct from June 1 to Aug. 31 and feature life-size animatronic interpretations of dinosaurs. On exhibit will be Compsognathus, Dilophosaurus, Parasaurolophus and babies, Stegosaurus and baby, Quetzalcoatlus and babies and T. rex. Each dinosaur is fitted with electronic brains to activate and control movements and produce the sounds. Admission to the Zoo and “DinoRoars” is free.
Opening June 1, “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live” takes audiences on a prehistoric journey into a new dimension where they get to meet a menagerie of insects and dinosaurs that roamed the planet millions of years ago. Featuring larger-than-life dinosaur puppets brought to life by sophisticated design and theatrical presentation and puppet mastery, these amazingly life-like dinosaur recreations connect children to paleontology and according to The New York Times deliver “solid science as well an extraordinary spectacle.” This interactive production features 19 dinosaurs on stage including Triceratops, T. rex, Megneura, Leaellynasaura, Titanosaur, and more.
“Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live” will perform 30-minute shows at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday in the Zoo’s indoor air-conditioned Visitor Center Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children, with discounts available for FONZ members and groups of four or more via a “four-asauras” ticket pack. An exclusive photo experience with a dinosaur puppet will also be available and built into “four-asaurus” ticket packs. Group tickets are also available. “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live” is written and directed by Scott Wright, co-founder and artistic director of Erth Visual and Physical Inc. It is the creation of Australia’s Erth Visual & Physical, Inc. The North American tour of “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live” is produced by Red Tail Entertainment.
While “Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live” is in residency, visitors can also enjoy ticketed movie screenings of “Pandas,” a breathtaking documentary adventure about introducing panda into the wild in Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding in China. “Pandas” will be on view in the Zoo’s Visitor Center Theater in collaboration with Smithsonian Theaters. Double Dare Live will feature two teams comprised of selected audience members competing to win prizes by answering brain-bending trivia questions, completing messy physical challenges and ultimately facing the legendary obstacle course.
The brand-new Double Dare series premiered this summer and ranks in the top three shows with Kids 6-11 on all TV. The new Double Dare TV series is hosted by digital creator and actress Liza Koshy, with original host Marc Summers providing color commentary on the challenges and lending his vast knowledge of the game and expertise to each episode.
Double Dare premiered on Oct. 6, 1986, on Nickelodeon, and ran from 1986-1993, making it the network’s longest running game show. Marc Summers served as the show’s original host from 1986-1993. Shortly after its debut, Double Dare became one of the most popular original daily programs on cable television. The series went into syndication in 1988, and was later revived as Super Sloppy Double Dare in 1989. The show also ran on broadcast television as Family Double Dare in 1988, followed by new versions on Nick, including Double Dare 2000.

The company will consist of a presenting division, Red Tail Live! – presenting great performances in the best venues in North America, and a producing division, Red Tail Productions – creating amazing entertainment for audiences world-wide. Together, Red Tail is ready to take flight.
Marc Engel, formerly President of 35 Concerts will serve as President of Red Tail Entertainment. A performing arts veteran with over 30 years’ experience in the management and programming of theatres and performing arts centers, his career includes high profile management assignments in internationally recognized venues including Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Over the last ten years, as 35 Concerts, Mr. Engel has promoted concerts in theatres and arenas in over 60 US Cities, in venues like the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Benedum Centre in Pittsburgh, Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, Bass Concert Hall in Austin, Jackson Hall in Nashville, the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati, and the Altria Theatre in Richmond. Mr. Drayer has been a key player in the high technology industry for over thirty years and built two publicly traded companies. He was named Top CEO by Morgan Stanley Ventures in Silicon Valley in 2000, and his second company was named one of Forbes Top 50 Best Run Companies in the U.S. Mr. Drayer’s philanthropic endeavors include twelve years of service on the Lamar University Foundation and the Engineering Advisory Council. The electrical engineering department at Lamar University bears his name.
Kelsey Young will serve as Vice President and Talent Buyer, USA East, of Red Tail Live! A graduate of Texas Christian University, Kelsey has been with 35 Concerts for the past three years where she successfully worked to initiate relationships and bookings in new regions and new venues, largely in the Southeast, Eastern seaboard and midwestern United States.
Deborah Barr is the General Manager of Red Tail Productions and oversees the day to day business and operation of their current shows, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live and Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium Adventure. She has worked as a production and stage manager for dance, theatre, opera and ceremonial events for numerous companies and producing entities. She worked for many years as Events Manager at the University of Texas at Austin, and as a company manager on tour.
